Power outages prompt CMS to cancel classes at 20 schools. See the list

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have canceled classes at 20 schools Thursday, May 9, due to thousands of power outages in the county associated with overnight storms.

As of 7:30 a.m., 31,000 outages were reported in Mecklenburg County by Duke Energy.

Here is a list of the schools that will be closed Thursday for “the safety and well-being” of students. Schools not on the list will have classes as usual, CMS says:

  • Albemarle Road Elementary School

  • Briarwood Academy

  • Cochrane Collegiate

  • Devonshire Elementary School

  • Garinger High School

  • Harding High School

  • Hidden Valley Elementary School

  • Independence High School

  • Lincoln Heights Montessori

  • Merry Oaks International Academy

  • Montclaire Elementary School

  • Oaklawn Language Academy

  • Paw Creek Elementary School

  • Phillip O. Berry High School

  • Rocky River High School

  • Steele Creek Elementary School

  • Thomasboro Academy

  • Villa Heights Elementary School

  • Westerly Hills Elementary School

  • Wilson Middle School

“There will be no school and no remote learning for students. There will be no ASEP, no extracurricular activities or sports,” CMS officials said

“Any national or state testing that students were scheduled for today will be rescheduled. Teachers will have a remote workday.”
