Power Outage Closes New Hampshire Ski Resort

Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, will not open today due to a power outage caused by high winds.

Waterville Valley explained that a "large number" of surrounding businesses and homes also lost power. By noon, there were at least 170,000 outages across New Hampshire as winds and wet snow fell trees and electrical lines.

The storm, dubbed a "strong nor'easter" by WMUR 9, is expected to remain intense throughout the day, creating hazardous driving conditions.

On Instagram, Waterville Valley noted that it retained power in its main lodge thanks to a backup generator. The resort encourages those who have lost power nearby to stop by, grab a coffee, and warm up.

While Waterville Valley hasn't shared information about the prospects of reopening tomorrow, thoughts of powder turns likely loom among local skiers.

The resort has picked up six to seven inches of snow so far, with heavy precipitation expected throughout the rest of the day. Hourly snowfall rates have exceeded one inch per hour today in certain areas of New Hampshire, creating the perfect recipe for bottomless skiing conditions.

Forecasters predict the ongoing nor'easter will begin to reduce in intensity tonight, bringing mellower weather conditions tomorrow.

However, "given the scope and severity of the outage, we don't expect to have power restored any time soon," Waterville Valley noted on Instagram. The powder turns might have to wait a little longer—stay tuned to Waterville Valley's socials.
