Poway High School’s construction class rebounds after theft

POWAY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — The construction class at Poway High School is back in action following a recent theft that left students without vital tools.

Gene Tallon, the class teacher, expressed initial distress.

“Obviously the kids couldn’t work right away,” he said. “I will admit that I was emotionally distraught the first day.”

However, thanks to freshman Quinn Lawrence’s initiative in organizing power tool donations, the program swiftly regained momentum.

“I didn’t think that we would get this much. All of it back plus even more, that’s great,” Lawrence remarked on the overwhelming response.

Lawrence’s campaign garnered thousands of dollars and additional tools, amplifying the program’s capacity to provide real-world construction experience.

“The math here is all applied and you can see it be applied instead of reading a textbook about it,” noted one construction student.

Gratitude from students towards donors is evident across the Poway campus, with donated items filling storage sheds, lunch tables and even ongoing projects like tiny houses.

Mr. Tallon envisions the program’s success extending beyond Poway High School.

“The more that people are aware and the more people just keep wanting to be a part of the program, Poway High can grow as a school,” he said.
