JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The U.S. Postal Service’s exit from the building across from Johnson City City Hall is one step closer to reality with the lease of a former manufacturing site to house its distribution and collection center.

“We can confirm that the Postal Service has a lease on 128 Roweland Drive, Johnson City, TN 37601,” spokeswoman Evelina Ramirez confirmed Thursday after an inquiry from News Channel 11.

“We are currently reviewing alternative locations for our retail operations,” she added.

The Roweland Drive site, built in 1966, was home to Kennametal Corp. for decades. The company shuttered operations there in 2021.

The Post Office has leased 530 E. Main St. from Johnson City, using it as both a distribution and retail center, since the early 1970s.

City leaders informed USPS in 2021 that they didn’t plan to renew the lease, which expired Aug. 31, 2023. The city plans to use the building and 5-plus acres of property but has not finalized a use yet.

An extended lease agreement gave USPS until the beginning of this month to find a new location for the functions currently at the East Main Street site.
