Portsmouth Public Schools spring updates

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) released a list of updates and events coming up this spring.

Two events are coming up in April:

On Saturday, April 20, the Portsmouth Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) is holding its annual Community Resource Fair. The fair will take place at the JE Parker Recreation Center, 2430 Turnpike Road from 9 a.m. to noon. At the fair, find giveaways, food, special prizes and information about community resources. On Saturday, April 27 the Fourth Annual Color Run will take place at Churchland High School, 4301 Cedar Ln at 9 a.m. It is a 3K distance. Each year, it helps to raise funds to provide swim lessons for Portsmouth Public School families. In 2023, the event had over 1,000 participants.

They released two updates for programming:

School Orchestra Artistic Residency (SOAR) program

Portsmouth Public Schools is partnering with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra for the School Orchestra Artistic Residency (SOAR) program. In the program, musicians will come in during the school day to work with Portsmouth Public Schools six middle and high school programs.

The program has been ongoing for years. The Virginia Symphony Orchestra provides the service at no charge to the school division. Musicians will be present at select dates through May. To view the complete list of times, call 757-393-8743.

PPS Bright Start Preschool program

Applications are now open. Staff are currently accepting applications for children to be a part of the program. It is for children who will be 4-years-old on or before Sept. 30, 2024. Families with children that meet the age requirement can complete and return their applications through Thursday, May 30.
