Portland gears up to host 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Portland is gearing up to host the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament as thousands of fans are expected to be rooting for their favorite teams on Friday.

The impact can be felt with safety initiatives from the Portland Police Bureau while small businesses like The Sports Bra prepare for additional business.

CEO and founder Jenny Nguyen said The Sports Bra will increase their beer and food supply by 50%, adding that they “brought on a couple more additional staff because we also know that March is literally madness.”

The bar will also co-host an all-ages watch party featuring appearances from WNBA stars at the Spirit of ’77 sports bar for the sweet 16 matchups.

Portland police are gearing up as well by providing additional manpower such as two-person teams that will patrol the downtown and Moda Center areas from 8 a.m. to midnight.

“I just think as a city, we have to have a recognition that we’re a big city and we’re going to have big city challenges,” PPB Chief Bob Day said. “And that doesn’t mean that it’s, you know, unsafe. It just means that we just need to have that awareness as we move about.”

Day said the extra two to three dozen patrols will not take officers from their regular routes.
