Portage’s compost facility nearing capacity, closing to public

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of Portage said the Oakland Drive Compost Facility is closed to the public because it is nearing capacity.

The city said the facility would be closed to non-municipal organizations starting Wednesday.

Since the May 7 tornado, the Oakland Drive Compost Facility has opened to commercial tree removal companies to help remove downed trees. However, the city said the facility is near capacity.

The city said the facility will be closed to the public to ensure the continuation of city services.

On May 7, an EF2 tornado tore an 11-mile path through Texas Township, the city of Portage and Pavilion Township.
