A misunderstanding has led one popular Wilmington restaurant to close. According to a post on social media, the Papanikolaou family said they ran into trouble as they tried to renew the lease for The Greeks restaurant location at 4401 Oleander Drive. Their landlord was under the impression that they weren’t interested in staying at the site, the post said.

“By the time we clarified our intention to renew, it was too late,” the post said. “We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support you've shown our Oleander location over the past five years.”

The note, signed by George, Roula and Nina Papanikolaou, was posted Monday and said the location was already closed. They also said they weren’t letting the closure stop what they’re doing with The Greeks.

They are still in operation at 7150 Market St. in Wilmington, and they still plan to open another location soon in Brunswick County in a new development at Leland Town Center, near the ALDI grocery store.

In a follow-up announcement, the family said they will begin offering more Mediterranean market items and specials soon at Market Street, including Mama Roula’s homestyle pastitsio and moussaka, stuffed peppers, and glakatoboureko (which is a custardy take on baklava).
