Poltimore House fire: Police arrest two teens on suspicion of arson
Police have arrested two teenagers following a suspected arson attack at a historic manor house near Exeter.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was called to the blaze at Poltimore House at about 01:05 BST on Tuesday.
It said damage to the property, which dates back to the Elizabethan times, was "quite extensive".
Devon and Cornwall Police said two boys, aged 14 and 16, had been arrested on suspicion of arson.
They were released on police bail until 4 July while inquiries continue, the force said.
Emergency services remain at the Poltimore House site, it added.
Poltimore House Trust, which was set up in 2000 to preserve the building and estate, said it was "devastated" by the blaze.
Dr Peter Totterdill, chairman of the trust, said there was "a deep sense of loss".
"This amazing place has been loved by so many people over the years, and my heart goes out to all the many volunteers who have worked so hard to protect and restore Poltimore House," he said.
"I know that many people are distraught by what has happened and we are all feeling a deep sense of loss."
