Pollen season starts early in North Carolina

HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — If you are sneezing or sniffling, you aren’t alone.

Pollen season started early this year, and many people are dealing with allergies right now.

“I’m going to be sneezing my head off and have runny noses and blowing my nose and coughing,” High Point resident Angela Wagner said.

Wagner takes three allergy medications a day to ease the pain.

“It’s annoying … Especially if you’re in front of a group, and then you start sneezing,” Wagner said.

Much of America asks: Where did winter go? Spring starts early as US winter was warmest on record

Deep River Drug in High Point says that to manage your symptoms, you need to be prepared.

“Now is the time to jump on it. If you can get ahead of it, especially folks that have a history of having allergy before … You’re going to have it again,” Pharmacy Manager for Deep River Drug Brian Marks said.

While the right meds can help ease your symptoms, one agency is tracking the data to help you minimize your pollen exposure.

The Forsyth County Office of Environmental Assistance and Protection’s Pollen Program tracks just how bad the pollen is every day.

Over the next three days, there will be more pollen in the air.

Medical experts said if you suffer from allergies, this can help you plan your day.

“If they’re able to get their medications early and prevent some of these symptoms, it obviously is going to pay off in the long run,” Physician Assistant for Novant Northern Family Medicine Meredith Chapman said.

Chapman said it’s common to see many patients having a runny nose, an itchy throat and watery eyes this time a year.

“We’ve had a ton of patients coming into the office early just due to us having a mild winter and a lot of allergies already,” Chapman said.

Chapman recommends using over-the-counter medication when you need it.
