Police have this warning after cell phone sparks fire

LAKE TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) — A worker at a local hospice is being recognized for her “life-saving quick-thinking” after a cell phone caught fire in a bedroom.

The Lake Township Fire Department posted about what happened on Facebook Friday.

According to the post, Rose Madrigal with First Health Hospice heard the sound of smoke alarms when she was outside talking to a resident. She tried to figure out why the alarms were going off and noticed a cell phone on a walker smoking and catching fire in a bedroom

She closed the bedroom door and got everyone out of the house before calling 911.

The fire didn’t spread beyond the walker, the post states, and was caused by failure and “thermal runaway” of a lithium ion battery.

“Rose was assessed and released on scene after breathing some of the toxic smoke. But her quick thinking to listen to the smoke alarms, close the door to the room where the fire was, and get everyone out quickly helped her clients, Julia and Michael, from taking in smoke, as well,” the post states.

The fire department gave the following three takeaways;

  • Check your smoke alarms

  • Have a fire extinguisher and know how to use it

  • Whether escaping from a fire or just going to bed for the night, close your doors to stop the spread of flames and deadly smoke.
