New police station in Provincetown ready

PROVINCETOWN — It's almost opening day at the new Provincetown police station. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday for the new station that has been built at 2 Jerome Smith Road. The new station, set to become operational on April 4, is just down the road from the current police station on Shank Painter Road. The police department has been there since 1986.

The existing building, once a funeral home, dates back to 1975. The building is prone to occasional flooding, and has building code violations and problems with accommodating modern communication equipment, according to the town.

Town meeting voters approved $17 million to build the 13,900-square-foot station located just off Route 6.
