POLICE NEWS: Investigation into fatal crash continues

Apr. 22—The Elkhart Police Department Fatal Crash Team continues to investigate a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred early Sunday morning neat West Indiana Avenue and Benham Avenue.

Elkhart police report at 2:30 a.m. officers found that a Pontiac Torrent had struck a light pole in the area. The vehicle had two men inside entrapped.

Medics transported both men to the hospital for further medical treatment. The front-seat passenger, identified as Montrell Curtis, 32, of Elkhart, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver, identified as Walter Holmes, 27, of Elkhart, remained in critical condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Elkhart Police Department at 574-389-4767.

ARRESTS

—A 56-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 5:07 p.m. Monday on charges of operating without ever obtaining a license and possession of cocaine, marijuana, and paraphernalia after he was stopped near the intersection of Lincolnway East and Kercher Road for traffic violations.

—A 27-year-old man was arrested by Goshen police at 8:22 p.m. Sunday on a charge of resisting, resisting arrest, and leaving the scene of a crash after police attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Elkhart Road for a traffic infraction.

—A 30-year-old man was arrested by Elkhart County deputies at 10:42 p.m. Friday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated following a traffic stop at the intersection of Cassopolis Street and Karen Drive in Elkhart.

—A 28-year-old woman was arrested by Elkhart County deputies at 3:03 a.m. Saturday on a charge of driving as a habitual traffic violator following a traffic stop on C.R. 17 near Beck Drive in Elkhart.

—A 23-year-old woman was arrested by Elkhart County deputies at 4:19 a.m. Saturday on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated-endangerment after he was found slumped over the wheel near the intersection of U.S. 33 and C.R. 50.

—A 36-year-old woman was arrested by Elkhart County deputies at 8:24 p.m. Saturday on a charge of criminal mischief after she allegedly entered a home in the 30000 block of Mockingbird Court in Osceola without consent and damaged property.

AWOL

—Neeley Schwinnen, 53, of Pierceton, failed to return to lawful custody at Work Release, 201 N. Cottage Ave., Goshen, at 12:51 p.m. April 19 and is considered AWOL.

—Bill Wheeler, III, 37, of Osceola, failed to return to lawful custody at Work Release, 201 N. Cottage Ave., Goshen, at 2 p.m. April 18 and is considered AWOL.

FIRE

—A 10-year-old is being accused of arson. A 61-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies at 1:40 p.m. Saturday that the child started a brush fire on her property in the 50000 block of C.R. 35 in Bristol.

—Goshen police were called to Genesis, 1846 Eisenhower Drive South, at 1:14 p.m. Sunday for a business fire. The building was evacuated and there were no reported injuries.

—A 26-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 1:29 a.m. Tuesday her vehicle was on fire in the 2400 block of West Wilden Avenue.

HIT-AND-RUN

—A 64-year-old man reported to Elkhart County deputies around 6:48 a.m. Monday someone in a gray 1980s Cadillac hearse crashed into his vehicle and left the scene on U.S. 20 west of Ind. 19.

—An unidentified driver was traveling north on C.R. 11 south of the intersection of C.R. 11 and C.R. 106 outside of Elkhart at 11 a.m. Friday in a Burgundy 2004 GMC Sonoma and exited the roadway on the east side of C.R. 11, crashing into a wooden fence by Woodland Estates. The driver fled the scene.

—Elkhart County deputies took a report at 5:31 a.m. Monday someone driving a semi with an attached trailer crashed into several Northern Indiana Public Service Co.-owned powerlines, at C.R. 150 and C.R. 7 in Nappanee and fled the scene.

—MidCity Trailers, 51401 Ind. 19, Elkhart, reported to Elkhart County deputies that around 2:50 p.m. Saturday a known woman crashed into a trailer and fence post at the property and left the scene without reporting.

—Elkhart County deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash at 23079 Old. U.S. 30, Elkhart, at 3:01 a.m. Monday. No occupants were found at the scene.

BURGLARY

—A 72-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that around 6 p.m. April 15 someone cut the lock on her storage locker at All Secure Self Storage, 54401 Independence St., Elkhart, and took a jewelry cabinet with the jewelry inside without permission.

—A Goshen woman reported to Elkhart County deputies at 8:13 p.m. Saturday that someone was trying to break into her apartment in the 30000 block of Riverbend Circle.

—A 67-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 1 p.m. April 17 and 11 a.m. April 21 someone entered through the back door of her home in the 22000 block of Cambridge Way and stole an air compressor.

CRIMINAL MISCHIEF

—A 57-year-old woman reported to Goshen police at 5:52 p.m. that someone vandalized her vehicle in the Market Centre Plaza parking lot at 4024 Elkhart Road.

—A woman reported to Goshen police at 6:10 p.m. Monday that someone caused damage to her vehicle in the 400 block of North Ninth Street.

—A 32-year-old reported to Goshen police at 7:03 p.m. Monday vandalism in the 2000 block of Saybrook Drive in Goshen.

—A 54-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 8:22 p.m. Monday vandalism in the 400 block of Winchester Trails.

—Paul's Auto Yard, 29332 C.R. 10, reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 3:20 a.m. April 20 and 4 a.m. April 21 several vehicles were damaged.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

An unknown drug was located in a package mailed to a property in the 23000 block of Wilshire Boulevard in Elkhart at 1:08 p.m. Saturday.

THEFT

A 49-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 6:02 a.m. Monday someone entered three of his vehicles at some point in the night and took change from the 900 block South Main Street, Goshen.

—A 65-year-old man reported to Goshen police at 8:18 p.m. Sunday that someone stole gravel from the 2200 block of Berkey Avenue.

—A 69-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that on Thursday or Friday, someone took her homemade political signs from her yard in the 60000 block of Pembrook Lane in Elkhart.

—A 52-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies at 5:04 p.m. Thursday that someone stole property from a vehicle on Feb. 8, in the 21000 block of Christopher Drive in Elkhart.

—A 39-year-old woman reported to Elkhart County deputies that between 9 p.m. April 16 and 8 p.m. April 17 someone stole property from a vehicle in the 56000 block of 27th Street in Elkhart.
