Police say Minersville man on motorcycle eluded officers, had meth when caught 2 days later

A Minersville man is in Schuylkill County Prison after police said that he eluded them on a Harley-Davidson and was in possession of methamphetamine when he was arrested two days later.

Jonathon M. Carvajal, 30, was jailed Sunday on $15,000 straight cash bail and faces numerous charges for both incidents.

Eric T. Wilson was in a borough police vehicle Friday approaching Sunbury and Fifth streets when he noticed a motorcyclist, later identified as Carvajal, pass another vehicle and drive through a red light.

A resident’s video at Sunbury and Fifth shows the motorcycle and the patrol vehicle, police said.

Wilson said that Carvajal, who was wearing a gray T-shirt and a bandana, looked behind him and saw the officer, who then activated his emergency lights, but proceeded to drive through another red light before turning onto Second Street and accelerating. Wilson lost sight of the motorcycle upon cresting a hill.

With the assistance of another officer, a photo was provided of the motorcycle showing the license plate. Records identified the owner, who wasn’t Carvajal, who does not have a motorcycle license.

Wilson went to the 400 block of Pottsville Street in Minersville and spoke to Carvajal, who said that he didn’t own the motorcycle, which was found to the rear of the address.

Wilson went to Carvajal’s address along with a Foster Twp. police officer on Sunday. Carvajal walked away from police while in the backyard and walked up the steps.

Police said that he then resisted arrest, tensed his hands and balled his knuckles. He was taken to the ground by officers and taken into custody.

While on the ground, Carvajal threw two glass cylindrical devices, police said. Police said they found 25 glassine baggies on Carvajal and a small blue box with three grams of a clear, crystal-like rock substance and baggies.

A test of the crystal-like substance and one of the devices tested positive for methamphetamine, police said.

Carvajal was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Edward J. Tarantelli, Frackville. He is charged by Wilson with felony fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, and one summary count each of reckless driving, careless driving, driving without a license and failure to stop at a red light for the Friday incident.

A preliminary hearing is set for 1:30 p.m. June 25 before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko, Port Carbon.

Carvajal also is charged from his arrest Sunday with felony manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance with intent to deliver while not registered to do so; and one count each of resisting arrest; possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia; possessing a counterfeit substance, all misdemeanors.
