Man killed in 'road rage' shooting in Central El Paso; another man detained by police

A 45-year-old man died in a "road rage" shooting on U.S. 54 in Central El Paso, authorities said.

Officers received several 911 calls reporting a shooting about 3:11 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, on U.S. 54 North and the Fred Wilson exit near Fort Bliss's Cassidy Road entrance, El Paso Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Robert Gomez said.

Officers arrived at the scene and saw two motorists involved in a "road rage" incident, Gomez said.

"We do believe this was a road rage incident," Gomez said.

A 45-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Gomez said. A 38-year-old man, whose name has also not been released, was detained by police in connection with the shooting.

El Paso Police Department's Crimes Against Persons unit is investigating the shooting. Investigators are working to determine where the incident originally started and the sequence of events, Gomez said.
