2 arrested after shooting at converted homeless shelter in northeast Denver

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver Police were on the scene of a non-fatal shooting at a homeless shelter that has been converted from a Double Tree Hotel in the Central Park neighborhood on Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

A representative with DPD told FOX31 that the call came in around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Denver police tweeted around midnight that officers were on the scene at the 4000 block of Quebec Street where one person was transported to the hospital with an unknown extent of injuries.

By 7 a.m., the police tweeted that the victim was an adult female and she is expected to survive.

2 found dead in Denver shelter, police investigating homicide

Several hours later, just before 11 a.m., DPD said that a 34-year-old man had been arrested for investigation of attempted first-degree murder. He was identified as Cameron Ware and investigators determined he knew the victim, and may have targeted the victim due to a prior conflict.

At about 4:49, DPD said that investigators arrested a second suspect, a 42-year-old man, who is also being held on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.

The hotel is part of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s All In Mile High Initiative to provide temporary shelter for people experiencing homelessness.

The shooting happened inside the hotel, which has metal detectors at the entrance. DPD said part of their investigation is determining how someone was able to get a gun inside.

This is one of many calls for service near the hotel since it opened in December. As of mid-March, FOX31 discovered that there had been more than 400 calls for service since January.

This shooting also comes after two people were found dead inside the shelter earlier this month.

After that homicide, the City of Denver said it is enacting a seven-point action plan to address the safety and security concerns. The site is already staffed 24/7 by the site’s service provider.

The plan includes a new management role responsible for the oversight of all unsheltered response and outreach, more staffing and case management help and increased patrols and security — including a badging system for site access.

The investigation is ongoing. The Denver Police Department asks that anyone with information that can help with the investigation to contact @CrimeStoppersCO at 720-913-STOP(7867).
