Police identify man killed when speeding car hit vehicle he was a backseat passenger in

A 27-year-old man killed when Delaware State Police said a speeding car hit the vehicle he was a passenger in has been identified.

Edwin Baawa, of the Newark-area, died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Saturday.

Baawa, according to police, was in the backseat of a Chevrolet Cruze that was eastbound on East Chestnut Hill Road turning left onto Chestnut Crossing Drive about 11:25 a.m.

As the Cruze turned, police said a 19-year-old man driving a Ford Mustang westbound on East Chestnut Hill Road at a "high rate of speed" struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet.

Baawa, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the Chevrolet, police said. He was taken to an area hospital where he died.

The Chevrolet driver, a 47-year-old New Castle man, was taken to an area hospital with not life-threatening injuries. The Ford driver was not injured.

Police continue to investigate this incident and troopers ask that anyone who witnessed the crash to contact investigators by calling (302) 365-8484. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.
