Police fatally shoot gun-wielding man on Brooklyn street

Police officers shot and killed a Brooklyn man who was seen pointing a gun at another man in the street overnight in East Flatbush.

NYPD Chief of Department Jeff Maddrey said during a news conference that two officers in a cop car patrolling East Flatbush around 1:15 a.m. saw a man standing in the street pointing a gun at another man.

Officers exited their vehicle and approached the man, who was standing at East 52nd Street and Church Avenue, ordering him to drop his weapon.

The man started to run and one of the officers “momentarily stunned” him with a Taser, Maddrey said.

“The male got back up, he still had the gun in his hand,” Maddrey said.

“He runs back on the sidewalk. He runs back to 52nd Street. The officers give further commands for the male to drop his gun and they fire their weapons.”

After firing their guns, the man fell to the ground and officers subdued him, Maddrey added.

Officers performed CPR before the man was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Maddrey did not provide the victim’s name, details of where he was shot or how many gunshot wounds he sustained.

Police said a bystander may have been grazed by the officers’ bullets.

“About an hour and half after this incident occurred, another male walked into a local hospital with a graze wound and he said he was in the vicinity of this area,” Maddrey said.

“So this will be part of the investigation to see if this male was actually hit at this location.”

The investigation is ongoing, Maddrey said.
