A number of police searches are being carried out in Londonderry after specialist terrorism officers found a suspected gun during a stop and search of a car.

One man, aged in his 50s, has been arrested after members of the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit recovered the firearm and ammunition.

The search, part of an ongoing investigation, was carried out on the Letterkenny Road, near the Brandywell area, at about 18:45 BST.

Police described the seizure as hugely significant.

"We believe this suspected firearm could have been potentially used in a violent attack - with the aim of killing or, at the very least, causing serious injury," said Supt Willy Calderwood.

The PSNI district commander for Derry City and Strabane said the investigation was continuing, with further searches in the area.

“We understand and appreciate the disruption this may cause, but I want to reassure you - our presence in the area and activity we carry out is about keeping people safe – which continues to be our priority."

The suspect remains in police custody at Musgrave Serious Crime Unit for questioning.
