‘Point-In-Time Count’ results show increase in unsheltered population

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The results of the 2024 “Point-in-Time Count” have been released, providing an estimated number of unhoused people in San Diego County.

According to the data, at least 10,605 people were experiencing homelessness in the region when the count was conducted back in January. This means there was a 3% increase from the previous year’s count.

The report shows that 6,110 of those experiencing homeless were unsheltered. This means they were not using any form of local shelter service. That’s up 18% from the previous year.

“We are disheartened to see that homelessness continues to grow in our region, and that so many individuals and families are living without shelter in San Diego County,” said Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO at Father Joe’s Village.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also commented on the newly released report, stating, “Now is not the time to retreat or become stagnant in our efforts to address homelessness, but rather to double down.”
