Plainfield man sentenced to five years for drunken Route 22 crash that left six injured

A 24-year-old Plainfield man was sentenced to five years in prison for causing a drunken crash on Route 22 in Bridgewater that left six people injured, Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald announced.

Jose C. Villanueva-Izaguirre was sentenced to five years in prison on May 10 for three counts of third- and fourth-degree assault by auto, three counts of fourth-degree driving while unlicensed and causing serious bodily injury, one count of third-degree unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated and driving while unlicensed, McDonald said.

Around 2:09 a.m. on June 11, 2023, Villanueva-Izaguirre was intoxicated while driving a Honda he had taken from an acquaintance without his knowledge or permission, at the intersection of Route 22 and Vosseller Avenue with two of his three passengers not wearing seatbelts, McDonald said.

Villanueva-Izaguirre drove through a red light at a high speed and crashed into a Kia which had three occupants. Two victims in the Kia suffered serious injuries. One person in the Honda suffered severe near-fatal injuries. Villanueva-Izaguirre and the other victims only suffered minor injuries, McDonald said.

Villanueva-Izaguirre’s BAC was 0.12% and he also had cocaine and THC in his system, McDonald said.

Villanueva-Izaguirre pled guilty to the charges on March 22 and was also ordered to pay $17,623.73 restitution to one of the six victims.
