Pinpoint Weather: Dry Thursday, rain into the weekend

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — High pressure will settle over Southwest and Central Virginia on Thursday, resulting in lighter winds and very dry air. Rain chances increase late in the week as a storm system moves over the Southeastern U.S.

Thursday will start with morning temperatures in the chilly 30s and upper 20s. Plentiful sunshine is expected across the region with afternoon temperatures rising into the seasonably cool 50s and lower 60s.

While the lighter winds will limit the spread of fires during the day, the low relative humidity will keep grasses and brush dry. Fires could easily ignite in these dry conditions, so be mindful when operating anything with an open flame or machinery that could create sparks.

Friday will start dry with morning lows in the 30s. Afternoon highs will reach the 50s under increasing cloudiness. Rain will move in from the south late Friday afternoon with more wet weather anticipated overnight into midday Saturday.

Periods of heavy rainfall may occur. Overall, 0.50″ – 1.50″ of rainfall is expected between Friday and Saturday. Locally higher rainfall amounts of up to two inches may occur. Winds will pick up a bit as this system moves toward the east. Saturday’s afternoon temperatures will be in the 50s and lower 60s.

More sunshine is slated for Sunday and Monday as the storm system moves toward the east. Morning lows will be in the chilly 30s while afternoon highs will range from the 50s and into the lower 60s.
