Pink Eye: Causes, symptoms and treatments

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., (KGET)— Pink eye has been spreading like wildfire in local schools recently, and how you treat it depends on what type it is. Dr. Puji Vithalanis, a family medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente, joined 17 News at Sunrise to discuss how to treat pink eye.

To be able to treat your pink eye, it is important to know which type of pink eye one has. That being said, viral and bacterial pink eye are the two types of pink eye infections.

How can an individual identify which pink eye infection they have?

When you have viral pink eye, it means you have a cold in your eye—you’ll often have it along with a cold or upper respiratory infection.

Whereas with bacterial pink eye, it often occurs along with an ear or strep infection. It usually causes a lot more mucus (green or yellow), and irritation than other pink eye causes.

Hand hygiene, warm compresses, Tylenol, ibuprofen, artificial tears, and, most importantly, patience will help get rid of the infection, which typically lasts one or two weeks.
