Yahoo Autos Pininfarina Is Building the Hydrogen-Powered H2 Speed Concept
At the 2016 Geneva Motor Show this past spring, Pininfarina showed off an utterly wild-looking concept: The H2 Speed, a hydrogen fuel cell racer that looked more like a spaceship than a low-emissions green vehicle. Now, the design house wants to make it a reality-albeit for the race track only.
Automotive News reports that Pininfarina plans to built 10 examples of the H2 Speed. Based on a Le Mans Prototype-2 racing chassis, the eventual trackday machine will sport the same 503-horsepower electric motors, driving the rear wheels from power generated by a twin-stack hydrogen fuel cell system. The drivetrain, developed by Europe's GreenGT, is said to be good for a 0-62 time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 186 mph. The concept car weighed in at 3131 lbs., rather lightweight for a fuel cell vehicle.
Pininfarina says each of the 10 examples will cost roughly $2.5 million. A working prototype is expected by early 2016, with production models coming just more than a year after that. Pininfarina CEO Silvio Pietro Angori told Automotive Newsthat the company will make a profit on each example it sells-likely an important selling point for Pininfarina's new owners, India-based manufacturing giant Mahindra.
