Pinellas County’s Gateway Expressway to open this week

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Crews are putting the final touches on a project designed to improve commute times in Pinellas County. Lanes of the Gateway Expressway are scheduled to open on Friday.

The $595 million project includes the first express lanes in the county.

The new infrastructure includes a toll road between Interstate 275, US-19 and the Bayside Bridge. Additionally, it widens I-275 and creates one express lane in each direction from Gandy Boulevard to 4th Street North.

Leaders with the Florida Department of Transportation say the work is necessary to aid traffic flow as more people move to the area.

“This project will have a beneficial effect because it will allow drivers who want to get to US-19 or I-275, they can use the tolled lanes that will give them access with no signals,” engineer Greg Deese previously said. “They can go down 118th and get local business access which will also have increased traffic capacity because of the toll road that’s going to go over it.”

Drivers will have access to the new lanes beginning Friday.
