Pine Bluff’s Gloves Not Guns aims to help youth stay off the streets as summer approaches

PINE BLUFF, Ark – One Pine Bluff organization wants to give young people more options this summer and help them channel their best selves without gun violence.

Officials with Gloves Not Guns said they want to be a resource that helps at-risk youth. Albert Brewer, Head Coach of Pine Bluff’s Gloves Not Guns, said they teach all kids ages 8 to 17 and even some adults but try to target those who are aggressive.

“It seems like there’s so much violence amongst our youth it seems like it’s out of control,” Brewer said.

Brewer said he hopes the gym becomes a haven for young people as they plan to keep the gym open Monday-Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and go to different events all for one reason.

“A lot of times we label our youth as thugs, but our youth is our future. If we don’t invest in youth, if we don’t sponsor our youth, then the streets will sponsor them,” said Brewer.

Da’Arrion Spencer, who is 15, said he has been boxing since he was 9 years old and he has seen how the sport has helped others.

“It keeps a lot of kids out of the street,” Spencer said.

Spencer said the sport has also helped him personally.

“I feel like if it wasn’t boxing there’s something that probably would have gotten in the way of things,” Spencer said.

Spencer is one of four boxers in the gym headed to the National Junior Olympics and he said it’s all thanks to the gym.

“I’m kind of nervous but I feel like if I just focus and go in there and do what I’m supposed to do I will come out with a victory,” Spencer said.

Spencer said he would like to become a pro boxer if football doesn’t work out. He also says other young people can gain a lot and have more opportunities by entering the ring.

“If you really put the work in, you can succeed in life,” he said.
