Woman jumped on hood of school bus after being shot: NNPD

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman who was shot Friday morning in Newport News climbed on the hood of a school bus, police said.

The Newport News Police Department responded to a call about a shooting at the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and 33rd Street on Friday morning, dispatch said.

The call came in around 7:40 a.m. Police received a call in reference to a shooting inside a residence in the 3300 block of Roanoke Avenue. When officers arrived, they located an injured woman who, they said, had climbed on the hood of a school bus.

The woman appeared to be suffering from non-life-threatening injuries from a gunshot wound, police said. The victim was transported to the hospital for care.

The suspect and victim knew each other, police said.

The school bus was on its morning route, stopped at an intersection, when the incident unfolded. There were children on the bus. No children were injured, and all parents were notified. Another school bus arrived to get the students to school. Upon arrival, the students were tended to by their principal and a student support specialist, a Newport News Public Schools spokesperson confirmed to WAVY.

A worker at the Big Apple Food Mart where the school bus was parked didn’t want to reveal his name or show his face but said he saw almost everything.

“This lady came into my store and just was screaming and saying that “I was shot, I was shot right there” and she’s pointing at that street,” he said.

In a jarring contrast, a “Please stop shooting” sign from Ketchmore Kids was right in front of the crime scene.

Director of Programs Troy Ketchmore said unfortunately, that’s typical.

“The sign is strategically placed there because that is a hot spot and we know this is where it [shootings] goes down, one of the places,” Ketchmore said.

The convenience store worker explained what the school kids did when the victim jumped on the front of the bus.

“Many of the school kids were there because it was school time, the time children are waiting for their bus,” the convenience store worker said, “and they were also recording the footage of that lady when she climbed on the bus at that time.”

Ketchmore said that just shows how desensitized those kids are and told 10 On Your Side the community must come together now before we lose the youth.

“We have to wrap around them,” Ketchmore said. “We have to grab them we can’t just dismiss it because this is what happens on a regular basis.”

Photos of the scene show a school bus inside of the crime tape. 10 On Your Side KaMarie Braye went to the scene and captured photos.
