Peura announces bid for Carlton County commissioner

Apr. 24—MOOSE LAKE — John Peura, of Moose Lake, will be running for the Carlton County of Commissioners, his campaign announced Wednesday.

Peura will be running in the 5th District, which encompasses the western third of the county, including Moose Lake, Kettle River, Cromwell and Wright. The seat is being vacated by

Gary Peterson, who announced Monday he will not be seeking reelection.

"The family name has been around for a long time and they know that we don't pull any punches and we're true to our words," Peura said.

As a candidate, Peura said his top concerns for the county include maintaining its roads and bridges, as well as ensuring the garage that the county operates in Kettle River remains open.

Peura spent half of his career as a public employee. His professional experience includes working as a substitute educator, bus driver, mental health practitioner and house supervisor. Most recently Peura served on the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education.

Peura ran for

Minnesota State Senate in District 11 in 2022

and lost to incumbent Jason Rarick.

As a bus driver for the Barnum school district, Peura recently took part in a

successful effort to prevent the district from selling its bus fleet and contract with a private bus company.
