Petition Demands Ivanka Trump's Line Be Dropped From Macy's

Over 60,000 people have signed a petition asking Macy’s to remove Ivanka Trump’s clothing line from their stores. This comes only a week after several factory workers overseas told The Washington Post that they were paid less than a living wage while working in the factories that make her clothing.

The petition was created by UltraViolet co-founder Nita Chaudhary, who takes issue with not only how Ivanka Trump factory workers are reportedly treated, but also the idea that Ivanka is violating her father's promises by even using overseas labor in the first place. She writes: “If Ivanka Trump is serious about serving as a ‘champion’ for working moms, she can start by living up to the values she claims to have by ensuring the women workers who make her brand’s products have access to safe, humane working conditions. To stand on the stage at the Republican National Convention and claim to millions of Americans that you are an advocate for working mothers — while exploiting women in countries abroad to make a buck — is a shameful display of hypocrisy.”

As of this posting, the petition has 62,225 actions. Abigail Klem, president of Ivanka Trump's fashion brand, gave the following statement to Teen Vogue in response to the petition: "Ivanka Trump HQ is committed to only working with licensees who maintain internationally recognized labor standards across their supply chains. Our licensees and their manufacturers, subcontractors and suppliers must comply with all applicable local and international labor laws, and the legal and ethical practices set forth in our vendor code of conduct. We are partnering with industry experts whose mission it is to advance human rights in the workplace not only because it is the right thing to do but also because it leads to better results for workers and businesses alike. We recognize that our supply chain is made up of thousands of women and we seek to ensure that the core values of our brand are implemented throughout. We will be looking at many programs to determine the most effective ways to do that."

This isn't the first time the Ivanka Trump clothing brand has come under fire in recent months. The brand first drew ire for ostensibly using the Presidency to sell a $10,000 bracelet when they promoted jewelry Ivanka wore during a 60 Minutes appearance with her father. Soon after, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus reportedly dropped the Ivanka Trump clothing and jewelry lines, respectively. This prompted Counselor to the President, Kellyanne Conway to promote the brand on television, possibly violating federal law in the process. Soon after, the brand was sued by a competitor who claimed Kellyanne's promotion gave the line an unfair advantage. And finally, a recent report claims three activists investigating Ivanka Trump's China labor practices were either arrested or reported missing.

Macy's has yet to respond to the petition, but watch this space for updates.
