Saturday Night Live returned for it's first show of 2019, and despite the troubling messages he posted only last month, Pete Davidson was cracking all the jokes at his own expense.

In December, Pete was visited by Police for a wellness check, after he posted a troubling message to Instagram.

"I really don't want to be on this earth anymore. I'm doing my best to stay here for you but I actually don't know how much longer I can last. All I've ever tried to do was help people. Just remember I told you so."

Prior to his message, Pete had been open about his struggles with borderline personality disorder, and praised Kanye West for speaking publicly about mental health.

"Bravo Kanye West for standing up for yourself and speaking out against mental health. I can't explain to you enough how difficult and scary it is to be honest about stuff like this. We need people like Kanye. No on should ever point fingers at you for your bravery in speaking about mental health. I'm seriously disgusted."

But, it seems the comedian was happy to turn his pain into comedy on last night's show. Explaining that fellow comedian John Mulaney had been teaching him that he "can have a life in comedy that is not insane". Pete joked: "After observing John's life, I publicly threatened suicide."

Then, at the end of his segment, appearing to reference ex-fiancé Ariana Grande, Pete shouted: "I didn't mention her once!"

We just hope Pete's humour is a sign that he is taking the time to work on himself.
