In-person visitation to resume for youth inmates in Shelby County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has announced that in-person visitation will resume at the Youth Justice and Education Center.

The sheriff’s office says that visitation may resume as early as next week and that the Juvenile Court is “providing the critical information and training needed to restart visitation.”

Juvenile Court Judge Tarik Sugarmon had previously stated that the sheriff’s office indicated that a court order would be needed to mandate parent visitation. Sugarmon says SCSO leadership received that order on February 28, 2024.

A correspondence obtained by WREG shows that on April 8, the sheriff’s office asked the Juvenile Court for information regarding the names and contact information of parents, guardians, and approved visitors for youth inmates.

Juvenile Court responded to SCSO on April 10 and gave the sheriff’s office access to a list of contact information for family members.

The sheriff’s office says that more information on visitation will be available on its website.
