Person climbs power line tower for selfie and gets electrocuted, Oregon rescuers say

A person climbed up a high-voltage power line tower for a selfie, got electrocuted and fell 40 feet in Oregon, rescuers said.

They fell just after 5 p.m. May 15 near Sellwood Riverfront Park, Portland Fire & Rescue said in a news release.

One person saw them trying to take a photo of themselves while on the tower, rescuers said.

Another person told rescuers they saw the “transformer” blow, then watched as someone plunged 40 feet after getting shocked.

An off-duty paramedic responded and found the person “conscious and breathing immediately after the fall,” fire officials said.

The fire department and an ambulance also got to the scene, and the person was “alert” and “ambulatory,” rescuers said.

The injured person walked to the ambulance and was taken to a hospital.

Rescuers said the power line at the top of the tower had 57,000 volts of electricity. It’s not clear if they touched the line.

Stay away from downed power lines

Now the fire department is warning the public about people putting themselves in dangerous situations, including climbing power line towers or standing on the edges of cliffs.

“No selfie is worth risking one’s life!” the agency said.

The fire department also said if someone is electrocuted, call 911 or seek medical attention.

“Electrical current can cause unseen internal damage and can also cause dangerous heart (arrhythmia), so it is best to be evaluated by a physician, even if your injuries seem minor,” officials said.

Additionally, if you see a downed power line, rescuers said to stay far way from it.

The line could be energized and dangerous, so the best thing to do is slowly walk away and report it to authorities.
