BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The permitless concealed carry bill has passed the House and is headed to the governor’s office.

During the 2024 Second Extraordinary Legislative Session, the proposed bill written by State Senator Blake Miguez R-New Iberia, was passed by the House. The bill would allow law-abiding citizens ages 18 and older to carry their weapons without having a permit.

The bill was passed with a vote of 75 yeas and 28 nays, according to the Louisiana Legislature. SB1 is headed to Gov. Jeff Landry’s desk.

“With crime running rampant in Louisiana, Republicans in the legislature have taken action. Governor Jeff Landry will sign the bill into law, and it will go into effect on the 4th of July this year, in honor of our nation’s Independence Day. We are again empowering law-abiding American citizens with the means to protect themselves and their families from violent criminals. No more begging the government for permission to protect what’s ours in Louisiana,” said Miguez.

“Criminals already carry concealed firearms without regard for the law. Constitutional Carry simply puts law-abiding citizens on equal footing,” Gov. Landry said in a tweet.

The Louisiana chapters of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action disagree with the passing of this bill.

“Louisiana Republicans have chosen to make our restaurants, schools, grocery stores, parks, and everywhere else we go more vulnerable to gun violence,” said Angelle Bradford, a volunteer with the Louisiana chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Instead of serving the Louisians they were sworn to protect, these lawmakers are bowing to a gun lobby that feeds on their political ambition to rake in millions of dollars — all while not taking any responsibility for the role it plays in tearing our families apart.”
