People can get fit among the azaleas through April

Apr. 2—Azalea gazing isn't the only way to enjoy Honor Heights Park this month.

Fitness in the Park encourages a variety of healthy activities through April.

"We wanted it to be specific to Honor Heights park and invite people to have additional activities, not only to enjoy the flowers, but also bring out the fitness component for visitors," said Muskogee recreation assistant director Brooke Hall. "We're focusing on wellness and fitness opportunities."

There are different activities throughout the month, with most held at the Papilion green space.

Fitness in the Park began Monday as a dozen people participated in a yoga session taught by Tracy Fenton. Other yoga sessions will be noon April 15 and 29.

People seeking more intense workouts can do a Burn Bootcamp with Cleta Mullins, fitness coordinator at Muskogee Swim and Fitness.

"It kind of gets you moving to where you're going to burn some calories, work on some strength and mobility endurance," Mullins said. "And it's all full body, so we're going to work on full body movements."

The bootcamp will be 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

There's a lot of different events for people to get out and get active," Mullins said.

Other activities include Walkercise, casual walks around the Papilion each Wednesday. There also will be social runs and pilates.

"I think it will remind people you don't have to go somewhere to move, if they can do it in the park, they can do it at home," Mullins said. "It's going to remind them 'hey, I can get out and move and be active just any time.' It might teach them a couple of movements they can do at home that they're not aware of."

Eastern Oklahoma Library System will host an interactive StoryWalk at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Park's arboretum. Hall said families can walk along the trail while they read a book about the upcoming solar eclipse. Glasses for viewing the April 8 eclipse will be handed out.

People aren't the only ones who can get fit in April.
