Pensacola police warns of phone scams after resident taken for nearly $50,000

The Pensacola Police Department is warning residents of phone scams in the area after multiple victims reported losing or nearly losing money.

The PPD says a city resident lost nearly $50,000 after a scammer called and requested money through various payment services.

"Law enforcement agencies will never send an email or call you and ask you for money via gift card, credit card, or any electronic funding source ... in order to settle a warrant, traffic ticket, parking ticket or to pay a bail bond," the release says.

PPD also says some scammers can even use phone numbers that seem legitimate on caller ID and use the real names of law enforcement officers.

"If you have any doubt as to whether an email or phone call that is asking you for money is legitimate or not, call the 'business' back that's requesting your money," the release says. "Use a number that you locate from a legitimate website or other source."
