According to a release sent out by the department, the warning comes after “One recent victim lost very close to $50,000 to these scammers.” The release added the department is “taking reports almost daily from new victims.”

The department noted that “scammers are very good” and oftentimes can show legitimate phone numbers on caller ID that belong to law enforcement agencies.

Although there are different types of scams, including utility, medical procedures and car warranty, the PPD advised: “If you have any doubt as to whether an email or phone call that is asking you for money is legitimate or not, call the ‘business’ back that’s requesting your money.”

“Law enforcement agencies will never send an email or call you and ask you for money via gift card, credit card, or any electronic funding source such as Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, or any Cryptocurrency in order to settle a warrant, traffic ticket, parking ticket, or to pay a bail bond,” the release said.
