Pedestrian fatally struck by commercial truck in SF’s Tenderloin

(BCN) — A pedestrian died after being hit by a commercial truck in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The collision was reported at about 12:40 p.m. Thursday in the area of Ellis and Jones streets. The pedestrian, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital and later died there, according to San Francisco police.

The truck driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, who do not believe impairment was a factor in the case.

No other details about the collision were immediately available Friday from police, who encouraged anyone with information about the case to call their tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411 with SFPD at the start of the message.

Walk San Francisco, a pedestrian advocacy group, said the case was San Francisco’s ninth pedestrian death this year.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss of life and our hearts go out to this person’s loved ones,” Walk SF executive director Jodie Medeiros said in a statement.

The organization noted that both Ellis and Jones streets are on the city’s “high-injury network,” the roughly 12% of streets where 68% of traffic crashes occur in San Francisco, and acknowledged that the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has made some safety improvements to streets in the neighborhood in recent years.

“Positive changes in recent years have led to fewer crashes. However, the reality is many drivers continue to use this neighborhood as a cut-through,” Medeiros said. “More needs to be done so that everyone who lives, works and walks in the Tenderloin is safe from the significant amount of traffic going through this neighborhood.”
