Pay your May 1-June 14 parking fine with school supplies

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Parking violations might lead to a run on school supplies as the City of Las Vegas announces a program to pay tickets with donations of items used in classrooms.

Only certain violations will be eligible between May 1 and June 14, according to a Wednesday news release.

“Qualifying citations include, overtime meter, restricted time zone, abandoned vehicle, commercial vehicle/tour buses only, bus or taxi zone, loading/unloading zone, registration not displayed, parked after park hours, taking two spaces and vehicle parked more than 72 hours,” the news release said, adding that other citations may be eligible without giving specifics.

New, unwrapped school supplies valued equal or greater to the fine — with a purchase receipt (required) — should be taken to the Parking Services Offices at 350 S. City Parkway within 30 days of the citation date. Qualifying items are:

  • Pencils

  • Pens

  • Erasers

  • Dry erase markers

  • Index cards

  • Paper towels/Disinfecting wipes

  • Card stock

  • Copy paper

  • Storage bins

  • Rulers

  • Scissors

  • Pencil sharpeners

  • Post-it notes

Donated items will go to the PEF Teacher Superstore, a nonprofit associated with the Public Education Foundation.

The City Council established the occasional program allowing for charitable donations in lieu of payment for parking fines in 2016. An amendment on Feb. 1, 2023, allows the city manager to approve the program.
