“Paws in Blue” Fundraiser supports Jonesborough Police Department’s K-9 operations

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) — The fifth annual Paws in Blue Competition & Demonstration Fundraiser took place on Saturday, which worked to raise money for the Jonesborough Police Department’s K-9 operations.

Money raised went to Jonesborough PD for things like veterinarian bills, dog food, equipment and more K-9-related needs. Officer Derrick Malone with the Jonesborough Police Department said that the event also helped keep their dogs in tip-top shape.

“We have a yearly certification that’s mandatory each year, we have to train so many hours a month,” he said. “It’s not like your dog, you teach them to sit or heel and then you do it when you want to, it’s almost a daily occurrence you have to do with these dogs training.”

Activities took place at the old Jonesborough Middle School’s field and featured K-9 officers from around the region who competed in challenges. Along with several contest categories, a demonstration took place where K-9s showed off their skills in article search, recall, tracking and apprehension.

After officers completed their contest and demos, the public was able to enter their pets for competition in the Top Dog Pet Show. Categories included cutest puppy (6-12 months), “waggiest” tail, best veteran (5 years and older), most handsome boy, prettiest girl and most look-alike with their owner. Contestants donated money to the fundraiser to enter their dogs.

Another competition was for junior handlers (14 & under) and adult handler (15 & up), which included give me your paw; sit, stay & come; fetch, bring back & drop it; speak; roll over & stay and owner’s choice.

Local vendors from different stores and artists with a variety of dog-related items attended, as well.
