New England used their second to last draft pick to grab Illinois offensive guard Ted Karras. By adding Karras, New England is adding more depth to the interior of the offensive line.

Karras 23, stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 307 pounds. He packs some serious weight making him a perfect candidate for a spot in the middle of the offensive line. He uses his exceptional upper body strength as a weapon as he is able to turn and seal defenders. According to NFL.com, Karras, “drops a hammer on down blocks to knock running lanes open. Effective power in small spaces. Adequate hand placement, but generally keeps them inside. Gritty demeanor on the field. Quality pass sets with a heavy-handed punch.” He has been known to be weak against the bull rush and sometimes struggles to sustain his blocks while moving laterally.

Ted Karras is the great nephew of former Detroit Lion, Alex Karras so he has football intertwined into his DNA. Karras started all four years while attending Illinois. During his junior year, he tore his ACL causing him to miss the last four games of the season. A remarkably fast recovery saw Karras back on the field much sooner than most would have anticipated. Karras was able to start in 12 games as a senior.

Keeping in mind Karras’ rare lineage, he might have more of an opportunity to make New England’s final roster. The young man has joined a team that can help him realize his full potential. Patriots’ fans know that Tom Brady’s protection was subpar last season largely due to poor depth on the offensive line. Karras will be a part of what is shaping up to be a fierce competition among offensive linemen this fall.
