PATERSON — Police responding to a reported fight at a 5th Ward apartment building early Monday morning found a 31-year-old city man who later was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The killing was Paterson’s third homicide of 2024. The city did not have its third homicide of 2023 until May 5, according to data compiled by Paterson Press.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has not released the name of the victim, only saying he was found in a basement apartment. The fight reportedly took place at Straight Street and 16th Avenue, and police were contacted about it at 1:54 a.m., the Prosecutor’s Office said.

Authorities have released few other details about the crime.

What did officials say?

Councilman Luis Velez, who represents the 5th Ward, said police had not notified him about the killing.

“That’s a quiet area. We don’t have a lot of problems around there,” Velez said. “It’s probably an isolated case.”

The councilman said there are many surveillance cameras in that area, adding that he hoped video footage would help detectives track down the killer.

Before Monday’s incident, the city’s last fatal assault that didn’t involve a gun or a knife was in November 2022, according to homicide data compiled from prosecutor press releases.
