Palomar Health closing behavioral health unit in Poway

POWAY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Palomar Health is set to close its last remaining behavioral health unit, which is located in Poway.

The 12-bed facility will shut its doors for good on June 30, 2024. Some of the following services have been available at this unit:

  • Psychiatric intensive care and crisis stabilization

  • Multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment

  • Voluntary and involuntary treatment

  • Individual and group psychotherapy

  • Medication management

  • Supportive group, individual and milieu therapy

  • Individual and group psychotherapy

  • Recreation therapy, art therapy, music therapy and pet therapy

  • Individualized treatment plans

  • Comprehensive discharge planning and aftercare

  • The Joint Commission accreditation

  • Training site for student nurses and psychology interns

  • Family support and education

Patients will be moved to the Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital in Serra Mesa. As reported by the San Diego Tribune, Sharp HealthCare stated that this facility has the capacity to handle the influx of anticipated referrals following the closure in Poway.

According to health officials, the move will allow them to focus on building a new 120-bed mental hospital in Escondido.
