PALESTINE, Texas (KETK) – Police arrested two men suspected of shooting in a Palestine neighborhood Sunday around 1:41 a.m.

Officer I. Pettigrew and Sgt B. Nicholson reportedly heard bursts of gunfire from McClellan Street, and a caller reported hearing the shots from the 700 block of S. Fulton Street. As officers investigated the area, they saw a vehicle fleeing the area and the passenger “moving about furtively” inside the car as it passed.

When they initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, officials said they immediately smelled marijuana. After an officer noticed an AR-15 style rifle in the floorboard behind the driver, both occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.

The driver was identified as 20-year-old Darrius White, and the passenger was identified as 21-year-old Dreyon Barrett. Both were charged with deadly conduct and booked into the Anderson County Jail.

Officers said the gun was still warm to the touch when they recovered it. During questioning, police said White was vague on the details but admitted shots had been fired from the weapon.

Additionally, officers found eight cartridge cases in front of 616 S. Dorrence Street similar to the rounds recovered from the rifle.

“The back half of this residence was missing, and it was uninhabitable, but there was evidence of narcotics activity and loitering at the location,” police said. “There was at least one bullet hole in a window of the residence which penetrated through a back wall and apparently exited the open back side, as well as defects at the front of the residence that may have been caused by fired rounds.”

No victims were found and police are unsure if anyone was at the residence at the time of the shooting.
