Pair of 19-year-olds accused of overnight Champaign robbery

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Two 19-year-olds are under arrest in Champaign after police said they robbed a convenience store overnight.

Officials with the Champaign Police Department said the teens are Randy Copeland of Chicago and Travon Gibson of Hammon, Ind. Both are in custody at the Champaign County Jail on preliminary charges of armed robbery and unlawful use of weapons.

The two are accused of robbing a business at Mattis and Bradley Avenues early Tuesday morning. Police officials said that around midnight, one of the suspects held the business’ clerks at gunpoint while the other stood as a lookout. No one was hurt, but the suspects stole an unknown amount of cash.

Investigators later obtained a search warrant for the home they left; the warrant was served at 7:11 a.m. and officials said the search turned up evidence tying them to the robbery.

The Champaign Police Department is still investigating. Anyone who has additional information, as either a witness or with outdoor surveillance footage near the scene of the robbery, is asked to contact the CPD at 217-351-4545 or Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477.
