With the offseason in full swing, there’s a lot to look forward to between now and when the Green Bay Packers take the field against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 11th.

To help pass the time and my love for alliterations and little known trivia, we’ll have a weekly feature called Fun Fact Friday.

Before we begin, I want to acknowledge the Green Bay Packer fan base and apologize in advance if any of these facts aren’t new to you. I want to pick things that are interesting and can help any casual fan geek out on their team.

Did you Know?!?

The Green Bay Packers organization is one of the most revered in all of professional sports because of its rich history (second-oldest team in the NFL) and ability to be widely successful in what is called a small market.

The team has a long list of players and coaches in the hall of fame and the Super Bowl trophy is named after the most recognizable Packer, coach Vince Lombardi because the team won the first (and second) Super Bowl.

The fun fact is not that the Packers won the first Super Bowl, but something the legendary Lombardi is quoted to saying. Chances are, you can find this quote throughout the country on the walls of aspiring athlete’s training facility.

“Winning isn’t everything,” Lombardi supposedly has said. “It’s the only thing.”

That has the makings of a great Gatorade campaign and helping that underdog team overcome adversity and win the championship, right? Turns out, the famous quote was someone’s summary of what Lombardi actually said.

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing,” Lombardi actually said.

Either way, Lombardi had his desire of winning at the core of his coaching style and motivation. Even though his actual quote wasn’t as abrasive as it’s made to be, the Packers have known how to win since the beginning.
