P&G recalls 8.2M bags of Tide, Gain and other laundry pods over safety concerns

Procter & Gamble is recalling 8.2 million bags of Tide, Gain and other laundry detergent pod brands due to an exterior packaging defect that could endanger children, the company announced.

The Cincinnati-based consumer products giant said Friday no incidents or injuries have been linked to the products in the recall but the company has received four reports of children accessing laundry pods, with three ingesting liquid, during the period the products were sold. Company officials said the recall was not spurred by consumer complaints.

The defect leading to the recall is that the exterior packaging can split along the zipper and allow a child to handle the pods that are poisonous if swallowed. The recall affects some products sold under the Ace and Ariel brand in both the U.S. and Canada. P&G said it notified the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada immediately and stopped production of these lots.

P&G said consumers should immediately get the recalled bags out of sight and reach of children. The company is offering both a full refund and a free replacement child-resistant bag to store the product. Consumers can also get a cabinet lock for laundry materials.

The recalled pods were manufactured between September 2023 and February and sold at Big Lots, CVS, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, and other major stores as well as online at Amazon.com.

Consumers can check to see if their bag is part of the recall by checking the lot code on the bottom of their bag. Recalled lot codes will be listed at www.pg.com/bags. To participate in the recall, consumers can submit a photo of the recalled product, showing the lot code.

Consumers can contact Procter & Gamble toll-free at 833-347-5764 from Monday through Friday, 9 AM ET to 6 PM ET, Saturday, 9 AM ET to 5:30 PM ET, or online at www.pg.com/bags.
