Owl released at Roanoke Star after a year of rehabilitation at wildlife center

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — It’s been more than a year since a Great Horned Owl arrived at the Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke. But now, the owl is spreading its wings and returning back to the wild.

A Roanoke City officer first brought the owl to the center on March 14, 2023. Staff says after several unsuccessful attempts to locate the owl’s nest, and with it being very young, the owl was admitted into care.

A few days later, the owl went into surgery to repair damaged feathers.

According to the Virginia Wildlife Center of Roanoke, owls do not make noise when flying. If their feathers aren’t just right, they lose their advantage of stealth when hunting. This impacts their ability to find food.

After a year and one month of being in their care, staff released the owl at the Roanoke Star, where it spread its wings in the wild for the first time.
