Outlaws and Legends is this weekend, grab friends and hop over to the festival

Texas’ music festival of the year is here again in the Big Country.

The Outlaws and Legends Music Fest benefitting the Ben Richey Boys Ranch and Family Program is a two-day festival Friday and Saturday at the Back Porch of Texas, 3350 North Clack Street, in Abilene.

In 2023, ticket buyers raised over $100,000 — the largest single-year donation to date — for Ben Richey Boys Ranch and Family Program.

The nonprofit, Christian-based organization provides a safe home environment for boys to live where they are given tools to become productive, successful members of society.

Along with the Boys Program, the Ben Richey Family Program helps single mothers and their children get back on their feet by providing shared housing, life skills training and case-by-case resources to build support for after-program independent living.

Funding to Ben Richey Boys Ranch directly impacts those served at the Abilene and Albany campuses.

The rain-or-shine event has a packed list of performers, including the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Shane Smith and the Saints, Kevin Fowler and The Great Divide.

“We love coming to Abilene. I mean, Abilene was one of the first places in Texas that was playing our music,” JJ Lester, drummer of The Great Divide, said.

Lester said the band has been asked to perform at Outlaws and Legends before, and members are excited to make their debut on the Back Porch stage and benefit the Ben Richey Boys Ranch.

“We like to pay it forward, so anytime you can be a part of something like making music and then going and using it in some way to help other people, there is no more rewarding feeling than that,” he said.

Singer-songwriter Dallas Moore travels the road performing more than 300 shows a year, yet Outlaws and Legends is one of the shows that feels like a family reunion to him, he said.
