New Orleans man found guilty of 2021 murder

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A jury in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court returned a guilty verdict for the 2021 murder of Michael Rogers on Thursday, April 18.

The Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office reported that John Duncan was found guilty of second-degree murder, obstruction of justice and felon in possession of a firearm in the case of the December 2021 killing of Michael Rogers.

New Orleans to participate in carjacking task force

On Dec. 17, 2021, the New Orleans Police Department reported that officers responded to a call of aggravated battery by shooting at the intersection of North Broad and Dumaine streets.

Upon arrival, officers found Rogers suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Through investigation, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives developed and positively identified Duncan as the suspect. An arrest warrant was obtained for second-degree murder.

The conviction on April 18 is Duncan’s second conviction for homicide. Duncan was released in 2020, following a 2004 conviction for killing another New Orleans man during Jazz Fest.

“The conviction of John Duncan is a significant victory for justice and for the state of public safety for our city,” said OPDA Homicide Unit Chief Matthew Derbes. “John Duncan is a serial murderer whose history already suggested that he should not be on the streets of New Orleans. When given a second chance to prove he could live among law abiding members of the community, he took another life without hesitation.”
