ORF airport expects to have busy travel weekend for Memorial Day

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — As the Memorial Day weekend kicks off Friday, so does the holiday travel — and that means busy airports.

Norfolk International Airport, or ORF, is expecting more than 9,000 people to fly out from the Mermaid City.

“Our numbers are already are getting close to 10,000 outbound passengers probably another 10,000 inbound,” said Mark Perryman, CEO of ORF. “That’s a record day for us so we are going to be really close to another record.”

With over 50,000 flights taking off throughout the country, according to the FAA, the best recommendation is getting to the airport early.

Two hours for domestic and three hours for international flights is good rule of thumb when traveling on busy days. Travelers are also advised to double or triple check bags if they intend to pack a firearm. This year, TSA caught 10 guns at ORF checkpoints.

Currently, parking at the ORF is almost full, but the airport said they are prepared for the influx of travelers.

10 On Your Side’s KaMarie Braye is at the airport to provide updates throughout the morning.
